Government Grants Support Plant Nurseries to Meet Annual Planting Goals
The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy has signed agreements with ten islands to establish and operate plant nurseries as part of the ambitious 5 million tree plantation program. The initiative, launched under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's environmental commitment, aims to restore and enhance the nation's green spaces while combating climate change.
The participating islands include Kelaa, Kendhikulhudhoo, Maalhos, Muli, Thinadhoo City, Milandhoo, Innamaadhoo, Mathiveri, Kinbidhoo, and Dhaandhoo. Each island has received grants to establish nurseries that will cultivate saplings for distribution across the nation.
Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ali Shareef announced that 1.6 million trees have already been planted since the program's inception. With the government setting an ambitious target of 1 million trees for the current year, progress is on track, with 600,000 plants already planted as of the announcement date.
"The government has allocated funding for the program through the Green Fund to support the establishment of these nurseries, These ten islands were carefully selected based on their land availability and commitment to the program. We expect these nurseries to be operational within seven months." Minister Shareef stated.
The initiative represents a significant step toward environmental sustainability, with nurseries producing native tree species for reforestation efforts nationwide. The program addresses the loss of vegetation in the Maldives while improving biodiversity and environmental resilience across the island nation.
